Hidden in Plain Sight: A Better Way to Access Your Practice Data

A better way to access your practice data.

Recently, a veterinary practice posted a question on LinkedIn: could anyone's practice information management system (PIMS) generate a list of clients who own black cats? Most software platforms technically could do it, but the number of steps it would take to actually get there was way more than anyone could reasonably explain in a LinkedIn comment. Practice managers would be digging through nested report filters, cross-referencing fields that were never designed to talk to each other, and probably exporting a spreadsheet just to double-check the accuracy of the list.

Other commenters had a fair suggestion: call the support team. That's genuinely good advice, but practices don't run on a 9-to-5 schedule, and the moment a good marketing idea hits is rarely the moment a support line is open. That gap between "our system technically has this data" and "I can actually use it right now" is the thing that stuck with the Patterson team. That single post got us thinking about how much a practice's own data was available yet almost entirely unused.

What’s the real cost of a good idea that no one can execute?

Practices aren't short on data. Every visit, vaccine, breed, birthday, and coat color gets logged somewhere in the system. What's actually scarce is the time and technical fluency to turn that data into something useful on short notice. A vet tech with a great idea for a client outreach campaign shouldn't need a support ticket, a manual, and forty-five minutes just to find the right client list. By the time all of that comes together, the moment and often the marketing hook has usually passed.

What if you could chat with your data and get answers instantly?

AI tools like Atlas from Patterson let practices "chat with their data" instead of digging through user manuals or fumbling through report filters trying to guess which combination of settings will actually get them the information they need.

Here's what that looks like in practice: a staff member types a plain-language request such as "give me every client who owns a black cat." Atlas translates that into the right query against the practice's own records, with no filter-building or report-writer training required. In under five minutes, that same request can go from a typed question to a client list, to a drafted newsletter, to an email sent to exactly the clients who own black cats without ever leaving the conversation.

And that’s just one example. The same approach works for overdue vaccine reminders, senior wellness check-ins, breed-specific health campaigns, or birthday outreach for pets turning a certain age. The question a staff member can think of on a Tuesday afternoon is now a question they can actually answer on that same Tuesday afternoon.

None of this data is new. Practices have had it all along. What's changed is how quickly practice staff members can access it. A tool that used to require a developer, a support call, or a very patient afternoon with a report builder is now something any staff member can use the moment an idea occurs. That's time back for the veterinary team, faster turnaround on client outreach, and fewer good ideas that quietly die in the "we'll get to it" pile.

So, how much are you able to use your data? If the honest answer is "less than we'd like," that's exactly the gap Atlas was built to close.

Atlas has been built into NaVetor cloud software from Patterson, and it’s also available to work with other veterinary PIMS. See how it can help you get better results from your practice data.
